Bookstores - Charleston, WV - Old Colony, REALTORS®

As Dr. Seuss has told generations of kids, "The more that you read, the more things you will know." It's only appropriate that March 2, Dr. Seuss's birthday, is celebrated annually as Read Across America Day. Kids aged one to 100 will find amazing treasures at these five wonderful bookstores and libraries around Charleston recommended by our real estate agents.

  1. Taylor Books - 226 Capitol St., Charleston, WV 25301
As an active member of community theater groups for more than 20 years, Ann Saville has long had a love of the spoken word. In 1995, Ann opened Taylor Books to share her love of the printed word. The popular bookstore, minutes away from Charleston homes for sale, showcases other creative efforts with live music and an art gallery. With free WiFi and a comforting menu of soups, salads, sandwiches and baked goods, the on-site café is a perfect place to get lost in a good book. Hours are 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. - 10 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday.

  2. Cicada Books & Coffee - 604 14th St. W., Huntington, WV 25704
Cicada Books & Coffee incorporates literature and performing arts to serve as a community gathering center for people of all ages living near Huntington homes for sale. Events and activities include open mic readings, writing workshops and contests, book clubs, movie screenings, game nights and Saturday Story Time. The cozy coffee shop features a tasty assortment of locally-made donuts, pastries, and cookies. Cicada Books is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., and Sunday from noon - 6 p.m.

  3. Homeward Bound Books - 1588-A Washington St. E., Charleston, WV 25311
Some people are finding creative ways to promote books and reading. Instead of opening a full-service bookstore, Homeward Bound Books is creating used book "nooks" in partnership with small businesses. Their main location is inside Sullivan's Records, while other nooks can be found in cafés and coffee shops, art galleries, vintage clothing stores, and hair salons. Hours are currently sporadic due to a personal situation with the owners of Sullivan's Records, so call first or watch their Facebook page for information.

  4. Kanawha County Public Library - 123 Capitol St., Charleston, WV 25301
Libraries are truly magical places. Where else could you pick up a copy of a New York Times bestseller, take a yoga class, watch a family-friendly movie or participate in STEM activities, all for free? The Kanawha County Public Library is the largest public library system in West Virginia. Half of the 600,000 items in their collection are found in the Main Branch in downtown Charleston, which is open 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday.

  5. Morgantown Public Library - 373 Spruce St., Morgantown, WV 26505
According to their mission statement, the Morgantown Public Library has a goal to "meet the recreation, cultural, information and education needs" of local residents, and books serve all those functions. Be sure to visit the Aull Center, next door to the Main Branch, where you can trace your family tree and read fascinating stories about the history of the area surrounding Morgantown homes for sale. Main Branch hours are 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
