It's a new year and this can mean lots of changes. For many of us, redecorating is a major project at the top of the to-do list. However, this can mean big money and not all of have the resources for a major remodel – which can cost on average close to $20,000. In addition, some owners might not want to spend the money simply because they don't want to invest in something that might not sell in the future. For many homeowners, simple is better.

These days, there are a lot of great ideas out there on how to improve kitchen space for minimal cost. Magazines, television and even home improvement stores offer lots of ideas and advice to making some changes.

Here are some ideas that can help jump start your kitchen renovation and still leave some money in your pocket.

  • Painting is the most cost effective way to bring about change in a room. What color is best? Take a look around and evaluate what the primary colors are what is most likely to stay and highlight the room. Or, take inspiration from other rooms around the kitchen area.
  • Incorporate or renovate a backsplash. Backsplash tiles are quite popular and there are hundreds of ideas and designs that can breathe new life into a kitchen.
  • Replacing countertops is another low cost idea. Changing up the color or texture can make a big difference. Laminate is more affordable that granite and remember, if your laminate gets a lot of use you may want to go with a textured finish so less wear and tear shows.
  • If new appliances are what is desired but not in the budget, make a list in terms of need and what needs to be replaced first. Even just adding one or two appliances can update an otherwise lackluster kitchen.
  • Lighting can serve as a major change component in a kitchen. Whether it is changing out the main light fixture, adding undercabinet lights or switching out bulbs it can add a new layer of design and accencuation.
